EMERGING Show & Reception for our 1st Student Art Competition
The Channel Islands Maritime Museum in Oxnard was bustling with activity at the awards reception for the student artists in our first Student Art Competition. Artists, families and friends filled the museum halls with palpable excitement as they viewed the artists’ work on the theme Emerging. The museum received and hung the art work, and graciously provided refreshments. CAC Board member & photographer Brittany McGinley Pena deftly organized the competition and also photographed the event.
The show presented student artists from ten high schools and four area colleges. The mediums employed ranged from oil, acrylic, watercolor and photography to charcoal, graphite, pen & ink, digital prints and linoleum relief. The group selected for the show represent about three fifths of the initial submissions.
The competition judges included Christine Morla, Professor of Art at Oxnard College/McNish Gallery Director; Monica Furmanski, Assistant Professor of Photography at Ventura College; and Dr. Michael Pearce, Professor of Art/ Figurative Drawing and Painting at California Lutheran University.
The Judges’ Choice Award of $500 was presented by CAC President Cesar Perez to an Oxnard College freshman, Isabella Lizette Salinas, for Midnight Ruse done in graphite.
