Trabaj/ho Resistance of a Colonial Imprint Trabajo. Trabaho. Work in Spanish and Filipino, share every letter but one. While the meaning of the word remains ingrained in each culture’s history through an apparent shared crossover of language, there is more than what is on the surface of what work has been shared between these communities and the work that still remains. The Spanish Empire was known as “the empire on which the sun never sets.” The colonial imprint of Spain on both the Philippines and Latin America, have manifested in a way that has allowed both communities to share both a history of work and resilience. Both Latinx-American and Filipinx-American communities share the colonial imprint left by the effects of Spanish Colonization. Trabaj/ho aims to highlight how contemporary artists of Latinx and Filipinx descent are decolonizing many of these shared residual systems from Spanish colonization and what these shared experiences mean to them in their contemporary lives in America. Artists Featured: Jackie Amezquita, Jaime Bailon, Rosalee Bernabe, Aaron Dadacay, Anna Liza DeLeon, Matt Manalo, Maryrose Cobarrubias Mendoza, Manny Orozco, Gladys Rodriguez, Olguin Tapia, Jennelyn Lonzon Tumalad, and Maria Villote |

that GREAT ROCK MASS is called THE EARTH The pageant of life, captured in splendid detail, will be on display in this fascinating and informative exhibition of vividly crafted drawings and prints. See Southern California’s thriving flora and fauna illuminated in panoramic scale. Don’t miss the elusive and seldom seen mountain lion (Puma concolor), the always swift roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus), and the majestic condor (Gymnogyps californianus), featured alongside ever-present PVC traffic cones, Igloo coolers, and poorly concealed cell phone towers. Those who are sure-sighted might even catch glimpses of bright yellow nacho cheese! Using traditional and “electronic media,” artist Luke Matjas (MFA, UCSB) creates peculiarly altered and unexpected views of nature. His work meshes natural history museum dioramas and antiquated pulp science with contemporary skateboard graphics and a trip to the local Home Depot. |

Under the Influence of Finance and Fashion: Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation The artists and works in this exhibition explore the relationship between economics and consumer culture and reveal the immense impact that socioeconomics has had on the art of the contemporary generation, as well as on our culture at large. This is especially important considering the recent financial crisis and the constant bombardment from the media on luxury, fashion and glamour. The mixed messages felt in the collision of class and culture proves that we are all under the influence of finance and fashion. |
Fluorescences (detail), candy wrapper, paper and acrylic on
panel by Christine Morla, 2011. |
June 9 - August 18, 2013
Christine Morla: Kaleidoscopic Gaze a series of mixed-media paintings that celebrates and reflects the diverse cultural landscape of Oxnard. Each piece consists of hundreds of two dimensional paper constructions that are adhered to a wood panel creating a larger image. The paintings are built by first collecting discarded, multi-colored packaging from Filipino snack foods. This serves as amaterials palette. The found papers are then cut into thin strips and meticulously woven together into geometric and floral shapes. Diffusion: Paintings of Blinding Light, Kevin Short
recent body of over thirty plein air paintings created on location along the shores of San Diego County and the Central Coast. Possibly his most abstracted plein air work to date with little reference to specific settings, these works concentrate on the squinting reflections and brilliant, white out effects of sunlight’s glare and glow. Beach light so intense it dissolves perspective and linkages between forms. Yet Short’s scenes strikingly convey the reality of looking into blinding light that we have experienced during a summer’s day at the beach. |

Edging Reason- Words an investigation of hand-painted words and phrases by Gary Lang Over 70 word paintings executed on paper and on panel will hang along and down the Museum’s walls interplaying with its Classical architecture. Most importantly, these words are coloristically and poetically crafted by Lang to appear almost like anagrams of his experiences of life’s quirks and phenomena. Words are used like paint to stimulate the formation of mental images. In all, the exhibit will be an enveloping encounter that engages visitors’ vision, hearing and thought. |

The Shallows - Leopard Shark with Garibaldi and Topsmelt,
oil on mounted canvas, 24" x 30" by David Gallup |
June 10 - August 19, 2012
David Gallup- Beneath the Surface: A Closer Look at Our Oceans Stemming from David Gallup’s six year study of the Channel Islands, the artist will open an exhibit of 40 new paintings focusing on the wildlife and the ocean upon which they depend in Beneath the Surface: A Closer Look at Our Oceans. In order to better understand and represent the Marine Sanctuary, Gallup learned to SCUBA dive at the end of that painting series and discovered another world of inspiration. The experience of being in the deep directly enveloped by its incredible marine inhabitants is the subject of this latest series painted over the past year. The underwater experiences vary in local from the Channel Islands to other rocky shores and intertidal zones along the Southern California coast such as Leo Carrillo Beach and Malibu. Rarely throughout art history has the undersea world been tackled and depicted by a fine art painter. |
