Premonition by Roger Dean
Continuing its mission of supporting art in the community, the Carnegie Art Cornerstones is proud to be a sponsor for the new art exhibit, The Otherworld, at CLU!
As art students return to campus at California Lutheran this fall, they will be enthralled by a new exhibit at the Rolland Gallery curated by Michael Pierce. This exhibit of visionary art, providing insight into how art history takes form around new developments, will welcome students back after the COVID hiatus. The students love contemporary visionary art, which they access daily through social media platforms like Instagram.
The exhibit will be open to the public for in-person viewing November 12, 2021–February 3, 2022.

The Otherworld is an exhibit of paintings by artists who imagine the world as another place, where alternatives to everyday reality are made manifest as landscapes, animals, and people are transformed.
Historically, visionary art began in California in the 1930’s as a spiritual art inspired by young German immigrants and the ideas of the anti-authoritarian Wandervögel movement. In the 1960’s, the back-to-nature movement overlapped with psychedelic art, and brought a counter-cultural quality to it. Since then, it has developed into a burgeoning field within popular culture. Techniques in this genre evolved from early airbrush work to incorporating digital art, and the range has expanded to include grisaille painting with old masters’ techniques. The subject matter has expanded, too, influenced by developments in technology and neuroscience. |
Just a few of the contemporary visionary artists featured include Thomas Akawie, Mandy Cao, Chang Dai Chien, Uriél Danā, Roger Dean, Jeff Echevarria, Dawid Figielek, Alex Grey, Rick Griffin, Tim Hengst, Gonzalo Hernandez, Utagawa Hiroshige I, Jacaeber Kastor, Guy Kinnear, Mars-1, Bill Martin, Brian Mashburn, Cliff McReynolds, Jasmine Alexandra O, Scott Prior, Daniel Sprick, John August Swanson, Gage Taylor, Graham Toms, Oliver Vernon, Charles Francis Winans, and Kirsten Zirngibl.
